Discuss an ETF's Portfolio Role Without Giving a Recommendation
Use neutral language about a portfolio role in advisor education and wholesaler coaching.
Advisors may ask where an ETF “fits.” That invites an explanation of its stated design. Allocation decisions remain with the advisor and client under the appropriate process. Wholesalers can be useful by helping advisors compare their own portfolio question with the fund’s objective, index or active approach, exposures, and disclosed risks.
Start by asking the advisor to define the question. “Are you evaluating a portfolio role, a trading feature, or an education need for clients?” If they say portfolio role, ask how their investment committee labels that role and which characteristics it tests. Their answer might involve diversification, income, factor exposure, liquidity, or a replacement for a current holding. Do not assume those labels mean the same thing from one practice to another.
An advisor says, “Could this be a defensive sleeve?” A careful response is, “What does defensive mean in your model framework?” After the advisor explains, the wholesaler can say, “The fund’s prospectus describes its objective, holdings approach, and risks. Those materials may help your committee evaluate whether it warrants further research.” This acknowledges the question without predicting behavior or suggesting suitability.
Practice the distinction between explanation and recommendation. “Here is how the published methodology selects securities” is explanation. “Your clients should own this” is a recommendation. Before a call, have wholesalers identify the approved source for every factual statement and one question that returns the decision to the advisor’s process. Follow up with the requested documents and a note that captures the advisor’s evaluation criteria. Precision makes the education more trustworthy and keeps the conversation focused on informed professional review.
