Responding to an Advisor's Bond ETF Duration Concern
Give ETF wholesalers a way to explain published duration measures without forecasting interest rates.
Duration questions often arrive after an advisor has heard a strong view about where rates are headed. The urge to answer that forecast can pull the wholesaler away from their proper role. A more useful conversation explains the fund’s published measures of sensitivity to interest rates and lets the advisor decide how those measures fit their research framework.
Clarify whether the advisor needs an explanation of the metric, a comparison of funds, or help preparing an internal research discussion. Ask which approved report they are using and what time frame matters. This narrows the request without offering a prediction about rates or the fund’s future return.
An advisor says, “Rates will probably rise. Should I move clients out of this bond ETF?” The wholesaler answers, “I cannot make a client allocation decision or predict rates. Are you looking to understand the fund’s stated duration and risk from interest rates for your team’s review?” The advisor says yes. The wholesaler continues, “I can provide the current approved fund materials and explain how the documented measure is presented. Your investment process can determine any portfolio action.”
In a roleplay, have an advisor repeat the forecast twice and ask for a simple answer. The wholesaler should stay calm, distinguish education from advice, and offer a concrete research follow-up. Review whether the rep used only current approved figures and avoided language that suggests a market outcome is known.
Have the rep state the report date aloud during rehearsal. That habit prevents a current market headline from being paired with a stale duration figure, outdated prospectus, or unsupported description of the fund’s sensitivity.
