Handle ETF Expense Questions With Complete Context
Coach wholesalers to explain disclosed ETF costs without reducing diligence to one number.
“Why is this ETF more expensive?” deserves a direct answer and a broader diligence conversation. A wholesaler should identify the published expense ratio, point to the governing disclosure, and help the advisor identify the comparison criteria their practice uses. Cost is important, but it is not the only fact an investment committee may examine.
Ask, “When your team evaluates expenses, what else does it compare alongside them?” The advisor may mention index construction, active management, trading characteristics, the policy for securities lending, service, or implementation. The wholesaler can then explain only verified features and invite the advisor to compare them within the firm’s own process. Avoid saying that any feature justifies a cost or will improve an outcome.
During a call, an advisor says, “A competing fund is cheaper.” The wholesaler replies, “That is useful context. Shall we look at the published objectives and methodologies side by side, so your committee can decide whether they are evaluating like for like?” If the advisor agrees, use approved documents and name differences plainly. If a comparison cannot be verified, say so and follow up after review.
Coaching should eliminate defensive language. “You get what you pay for” substitutes opinion for evidence. A stronger response names the disclosure, identifies the advisor’s comparison frame, and checks understanding. After the conversation, send the documents cited. Limit the attachment package to the materials that answer the question. Record the question as a diligence criterion, because it may reveal which stakeholders or facts need attention in a future review.
