Discussing ETF Trading Costs Without Making Execution Promises
Give ETF wholesalers a careful way to address questions about trading costs and route execution detail appropriately.
Questions about ETF trading costs deserve more than a quick comment on spreads. Advisors need accurate education about the factors their firms consider, while execution results depend on market conditions, order handling, and firm process. A wholesaler can be useful by clarifying the question and connecting the advisor to approved educational material or the appropriate trading resource.
An advisor says, “Can you guarantee we will get a tight execution?” Reply, “I cannot guarantee an execution outcome. Are you trying to understand the fund’s published liquidity information, your trading desk’s process, or how to explain costs within your practice?” If the advisor says a team is placing a sizable order, add, “Your firm’s trading desk should guide execution. I can share approved education on bid and ask spreads and the mechanics of creation and redemption, and you can confirm the order process with your authorized desk.”
Do not turn an indicative spread into a price promise. Do not suggest a particular order instruction unless it is within the advisor firm’s policy and given by an authorized party. Listen for whether the advisor is preparing client communication, committee due diligence, or a live transaction. Each context calls for a different next step.
Try a coaching drill where the advisor uses urgent language and asks for a number. The rep should acknowledge urgency, state the boundary plainly, and ask one question that identifies the owner. A manager can score the response for useful education, accurate caution, and a clear handoff. That pattern keeps a technical question from becoming an unsupported assurance.
