Discuss Sector ETF Concentration at the Practice Level
Guide ETF wholesalers through timing questions about concentrated sector exposures without giving advice.
After a sharp sector move, an advisor may ask whether clients should buy now, sell, or add more. An ETF wholesaler should not answer a timing question with personalized direction. The productive conversation explores the advisor’s research process and points to approved information about objective, holdings, concentration, and risks.
Ask what question the advisor is trying to solve for the practice. Are they reviewing existing exposure, preparing for a client conversation, or comparing research resources? Encourage them to use their firm’s suitability and research process. Keep the discussion away from a view on where the sector will trade next.
An advisor says, “The sector is up a lot. Should I put clients into this ETF before it runs further?” The wholesaler says, “I cannot tell you what a client should buy or predict the next move. I can help you review the fund’s stated objective, concentration disclosures, and holdings information within your firm’s process. What exposure question is your research team asking you to evaluate?” The advisor says several households may already own similar securities.
That discovery can lead to a better next step: a research review or an education session for the advisor team. It should not become a workaround for individualized advice.
Coach reps on the phrase “what should I do now?” Have them acknowledge urgency, set the boundary once, and ask a question about the advisor’s practice. Score whether the rep uses approved materials, avoids market forecasts, and leaves the advisor with a realistic research action.
