Mandate Discovery Questions That Earn an Institutional Follow-Up
Help institutional sales teams clarify mandate fit before proposing a due diligence path.
An allocator rarely needs another broad strategy overview. They need a conversation that reveals whether a manager belongs in their evaluation process. Begin with the decision context: why is the mandate being reviewed now, which portfolio problem is under discussion, and who will test the recommendation? Those questions keep a first meeting from becoming an unstructured product presentation.
Suppose a pension investment director says, “We are looking at diversifiers.” An institutional salesperson can ask, “What job would a diversifier need to perform alongside the current allocation?” Then follow with, “Which outcomes or implementation constraints would cause the committee to rule a manager out?” The director may mention liquidity, governance burden, fee structure, or a preference for a repeatable process. Each answer creates a useful research path without claiming suitability.
Listen for terms that need definition. “Low correlation” might mean a desired historical pattern, an acceptable drawdown experience, or simply a concern that the existing portfolio behaves alike in stress. Reflect the distinction: “I hear that the committee wants to understand behavior across different environments, plus the operational implications. Is that accurate?” A careful summary gives the buyer a chance to correct the record.
Close by agreeing on evidence. Offer approved materials that address the stated questions and identify what remains unknown. Say, “I can coordinate the documented process description and the relevant risk disclosures. Would a session lasting thirty minutes with your research lead help us determine whether a formal review is warranted?” Coach reps to record the mandate trigger, exclusion criteria, stakeholders, and promised evidence immediately after the call.
