Building an Evidence Agenda for a Pension Risk Reduction Conversation
Show institutional sales teams how to earn a pension reducing risk diligence meeting through evidence and stakeholder clarity.
A pension plan reviewing options to reduce risk needs an evidence agenda before it needs a manager presentation. A salesperson can earn the next meeting by learning why funded status changed, how the committee will assess alternatives, and whether the consultant has defined a shortlist process. Those facts turn a vague interest signal into a respectful diligence path.
Picture a CIO saying, “Our funded status improved, and the board wants to reduce risk.” The salesperson responds, “What decision does the board expect to make this quarter, and what evidence would let the committee test an approach?” The CIO says the consultant has not recommended a shortlist. The salesperson continues, “A useful first step is to clarify the selection criteria before a shortlist is available. Could we invite the consultant to a discussion of the documented process, mandate boundaries, and questions still open?” The rep has moved the conversation forward without presenting an outcome as inevitable.
Reducing risk may be one response among several, and a gain in funded status may not persist. Ask how the plan’s actuary, consultant, and committee divide responsibilities. Confirm whether the client wants information for an education session, a formal search, or a policy review. After the call, send an agenda that separates client questions from materials the firm can provide through approved channels.
Have teams rehearse an opening for three minutes, with each person earning permission for a follow-up without using performance claims. The observer should listen for a clear decision trigger, at least two stakeholders, and one unresolved criterion. Managers can coach the next attempt by asking where the rep assumed a conclusion instead of inviting the pension team to define it.
