Prepare for a Conversation About a Manager on a Watch List
Teach institutional sales teams to address a watch list question with context and a disciplined review path.
When a strategy appears on a watch list after a difficult quarter, the person asking may want reassurance before a committee vote. Reassurance is not the job. Institutional sales should help define the question, point to approved context, and make room for the committee’s own governance process.
Find out what placed the strategy under review, which documents the committee has seen, and whether the consultant has identified specific concerns. Ask what evidence would help the committee distinguish recent performance from questions about the investment process. Do not imply that a decision to put a strategy on a watch list is wrong or predict what performance will do next.
A committee member says, “We need to know whether this manager belongs off watch list.” The salesperson responds, “That is a decision for your committee and advisors. We can make the approved performance and process materials available, and the investment team can address documented questions. What concern should we prepare for: attribution, portfolio construction, personnel, or something else?” The member identifies attribution and asks for a meeting with the consultant present.
The preparation note should list only verified sources and open questions. If an answer requires portfolio management or compliance review, assign that owner before the meeting.
In coaching, replay a scenario where the committee member asks for a promise that the next quarter will be better. The rep should decline the prediction, return to evidence, and secure a narrow agenda. Score the response for calm tone, source discipline, and a clear owner for each follow-up.
