Handle Sovereign Mandate Screening With Precise Questions
Show institutional sales teams how to uncover unfinished mandate restrictions before a research meeting.
Sovereign allocator screening often happens before the legal and policy teams have finalized every restriction. A salesperson who declares fit too early creates a problem for the allocator and for the firm. Use the first exchange to identify the screening process, the source of each restriction, and the point at which a formal fit assessment becomes appropriate.
Ask which mandate document governs the review, whether any exclusions remain under discussion, and who can interpret a restriction if wording is unclear. Offer approved process information and factual strategy materials. Do not translate a preliminary preference into a binding mandate condition.
An allocator says, “We are likely to require a screen on certain issuers. Can you confirm the strategy qualifies?” The salesperson answers, “We can provide the approved strategy documentation and explain the data and review process used for restrictions. Because your legal team is still finalizing the screen, I would not characterize fit today. Could we list the proposed criteria and arrange a review once the governing language is confirmed?” The allocator agrees to share the draft through the permitted channel.
The follow-up should distinguish three things: disclosed strategy facts, the allocator’s preliminary criteria, and unanswered questions. That separation makes later due diligence easier to audit.
Run a roleplay in which the counterpart keeps pressing for a direct answer. The rep succeeds by staying helpful, asking for the governing source, and scheduling the right review. A manager should flag any statement that turns an unapproved screening assumption into a representation of mandate fit.
