Review Data Format Compatibility Before a Technical Demonstration
Structure a technical discovery call when a laboratory needs to understand compatibility between data formats.
Questions about data formats sound simple until a laboratory explains how files move between instruments, storage, and analysis teams. A field application scientist should discover the specific file types, transfer points, and required outputs before claiming compatibility. Approved specifications and designated technical resources provide the evidence for a later answer.
Ask who creates the files, who receives them, and what system reads them next. Determine whether the laboratory needs an export, an import, a metadata field, or an integration review. Keep data governance questions visible when the files include information managed by another department. The discussion becomes concrete without requiring the customer to disclose research content.
In a fictional workshop, Priya says, “Our analysts need the files in the same format they use now. Can your platform handle that?” The scientist responds, “Let’s identify the exact format and the handoff that matters. Is the need to open a file, transfer metadata, or preserve an existing review step?” Priya explains that analysts use a downstream system maintained by central informatics. The scientist requests the format name and schedules a review with the informatics owner using approved technical documentation.
Use a handoff sketch during practice. Draw source, destination, file type, and owner for each step. Review the sketch for vague words such as compatible or seamless. Replacing them with the laboratory’s actual requirement prepares the scientist to obtain a defensible answer from the right source.
