Answering a Coastal Homeowner Before a Storm
Share approved preparedness resources and a claims contact route without interpreting policy coverage during an approaching storm.
Before a storm, a homeowner may turn a safety question into a coverage question: should they move the boat, bring in furniture, or wait for an insurer’s direction? The advisor should point them toward local emergency guidance and approved preparedness materials. Claims determines coverage after a reported loss, so avoid telling the homeowner what an action will mean for a claim.
Say: “Your family’s safety comes first. Please follow local emergency and evacuation guidance, and I can send the approved preparedness resource for your property. I cannot interpret coverage in advance, but I can also give you the claims reporting route if damage occurs.” The response acknowledges urgency without making a policy promise.
Ask whether the caller has a safe way to receive communications while evacuating and whether they want the claims contact details by text or email. Do not advise them to stay, return, or perform a hazardous task. If they ask, “Will moving things affect a claim?” state that claims review handles that question and repeat the immediate safety resource.
Practice a call lasting two minutes where the homeowner leaves tomorrow and is worried about outdoor property. Have the advisor open with safety, offer the correct resource, and close by confirming the selected contact method. Review for accidental interpretations such as “that will be covered.” A useful call gives the homeowner a checklist they can use today and a clear route for reporting facts later.
