Clarifying a College Student's Address Change
A personal lines advisor can gather household facts when a student moves between home and campus.
When students move to college, parents often ask quick questions: “She still comes home, so nothing changes, right?” The advisor should replace that assumption with a calm conversation that gathers facts. Ask where the student will live, how long they expect to be there, whether they take a vehicle, and what property travels with them. Those answers support the appropriate review.
In a fictional call, Dana says, “My son has an apartment near campus but keeps his room here.” Advisor Joel responds, “I can help make sure we record the living arrangement accurately. Will he live in the apartment for the full year, and will he keep the car there during the semester?” Dana says he will. Joel adds, “Thank you. I will submit those details for review so the policy can be assessed using the recorded facts.”
Avoid telling a parent that a student’s belongings or driving arrangement are automatically handled. A household policy, vehicle information, and residence facts each deserve review. Give the parent a simple next step: confirm the campus address, move dates, vehicle location, and a contact method for follow-up. Explain that any coverage and pricing answer comes through the approved process.
Practice with a student who studies abroad in spring and sublets the apartment. Ask the advisor to separate confirmed dates from future possibilities. A manager can listen for a useful recap: who lives where, which vehicle moves, and what still needs confirmation. That recap makes the customer feel heard while creating a reliable record for the next owner.
