Prepare an Industrial Chiller Load Survey Before Sizing Equipment
Use process loads, water conditions, and utility constraints to organize a chiller sizing review.
Chiller sizing starts with the process, because a nameplate from an older unit rarely explains the current load. A technical sales engineer can ask about fluid temperatures, production states, heat sources, and available utilities. The purpose is to establish survey conditions that engineering can review, especially when the plant has added equipment since the prior installation.
In a fictional meeting, process manager Claire says, “Our chiller cannot keep up on hot days. Can you size a replacement from its label?” Engineer Tomas replies, “The label is useful history. What supply and return temperatures do you see during the affected run, and which machines are operating then?” Claire says a laser cell and two molding presses were added after the original installation. Tomas asks, “Could facilities provide water logs and electrical capacity, while production identifies a representative run? We can capture ambient conditions, flow information, and the loads present during the survey.” Claire invites the maintenance technician who knows where temporary hoses were added.
Write the survey plan before discussing a proposed size. Include the measurement instruments, points to record, access requirements, and the person who confirms each item. A review can then compare the plant's process demand with technical assumptions in a transparent way. Engineering remains responsible for the final configuration.
For practice, take an equipment request that includes only a capacity number. Ask what process created that number, what conditions surrounded it, and who can supply the record. Repeat the questions until they sound curious rather than corrective. A manager can check that the engineer has asked for site facts before offering a conclusion.
