Build a Coating Thickness Measurement Plan Before Discussing Equipment
Clarify substrate, coating, geometry, and acceptance conditions for a thickness measurement review.
Thickness measurement requests often arrive as a question about instrument range, but the underlying decision depends on substrate, coating type, part geometry, and the quality method already in use. A technical sales engineer can help the plant organize those conditions. The plan should describe where measurement happens and what result the team will compare with its approved requirement.
In a fictional call, quality manager Priya says, “We need a faster gauge for painted brackets.” Engineer Marcus asks, “What is the base material, which coating system is used, and where on the bracket does quality measure today?” Priya says the brackets have steel and aluminum versions, with tight access near a bent flange. Marcus replies, “Could you provide drawings, coating specifications, and a few representative parts? I would like the quality technician to show the current method so we can define test points and any fixture needs.” Priya also includes the paint supervisor, who can explain the cure schedule and part handling.
This preparation helps engineering evaluate technical fit against known conditions. Do not convert readings into an approval of the coating process. The customer's quality organization determines the applicable acceptance limits and authorizes any method change. Record unknowns in the study plan so they do not become hidden assumptions.
Practice with a sample request for a gauge. Ask questions in the order of material, coating, geometry, and acceptance method. Then ask who owns each answer. A manager can review whether the engineer has gathered enough context to make a controlled test useful.
