Prepare a PLC Network Segmentation Workshop With the Right Owners
Show a technical sales engineer how to clarify plant network boundaries before a controls discussion.
A controls project can cross plant networks, machine controllers, and remote support practices. A technical sales engineer should bring the automation and information technology owners into the room before suggesting an architecture. Network access and segmentation decisions require the customer’s authorized review process.
In a fictional call, controls manager Asha says, “We want production data from three PLCs on the corporate dashboard.” Engineer Grant replies, “Which network zones contain those PLCs, and who owns the rules for data leaving each zone?” Asha says the plant network team maintains one zone while central IT manages the dashboard. Grant asks, “Can we include both groups with the automation lead? We should document the data points, connection path, and any review requirements before discussing an interface.” Asha agrees and adds that one machine supplier has remote access.
Grant has created a workshop with a clear purpose. The group can establish the actual scope, ownership, and acceptance criteria for a proof plan. He has not represented that the connection is approved or that any control system will support a proposed approach.
Roleplay the call with a colleague who asks whether the interface is secure. Ask who owns the network rules and request a diagram that shows the relevant zones. Finish by stating the evidence the customer team will review before engineering considers a design.
