Qualify a Robotic Welding Cell With a Site Survey Plan
Structure a technical workshop around part variation, fixturing, floor constraints, and safeguarding ownership.
A request for a robotic welding cell often contains several different technical questions: part geometry, fixturing, takt expectations, floor space, and safeguards. A site survey turns those questions into inputs an engineering team can assess.
Automation engineer Felicia says, “Can the robot handle every variant? We need an install date for our program review.” Technical sales engineer Omar responds, “I want to capture the six SKU drawings, weld procedure, fixture approach, and overhead clearance before we represent capability or timing. Which person owns safeguarding, and who can verify the intended floor location?” Felicia names the welding supervisor, EHS manager, and facilities engineer. Omar continues, “I will send a survey agenda that separates part requirements from site constraints. After the measurements and safety review, engineering can determine a feasible scope and schedule assumptions.”
The engineer has made the customer’s next step concrete without treating an early workshop as a design approval. Variant count alone does not establish what a cell can process. Drawings, welding requirements, fixture access, and safety design all shape the assessment.
Practice by asking a colleague to play a buyer who repeats the question about the installation date. The rep should state the inputs still needed, name the technical owners, and offer a survey date.
