Define a Torque Tool Verification Plan Before Changing Assembly Controls
Gather the joint, tool, and quality inputs needed for a responsible review of the torque tool.
When an assembly team reports torque escapes, a tool change may be one possibility among several. The technical sales engineer earns credibility by learning the joint requirements, current verification method, and controlled work instructions before suggesting a configuration. Those facts let engineering define what a demonstration or study must prove.
In a fictional call, quality engineer Lena says, “We found loose fasteners after final inspection. Which connected tool should we buy?” Engineer Ravi replies, “May I first review the drawing callout, the current tool settings, and how your team verifies torque today?” Lena says the line uses two fastener sizes and operators perform a sample check at the end of each shift. Ravi asks, “Could the manufacturing engineer bring the approved work instruction and the tool owner bring calibration records? We can document the joints, access limits, and acceptance method for a technical review.” Lena says the process engineer should attend because a new fixture was introduced last month.
The engineer has avoided attributing the finding to one device. A review can reveal whether the joint, fixture, program, technique, or measurement process needs additional attention. Keep proposed settings within the plant's authorization path. The customer owns the final decision about any change to assembly controls.
Practice by roleplaying a buyer who demands a model number. Ask for three technical inputs before naming any option. Then state the acceptance question in one sentence, such as whether a proposed approach can be assessed against the approved joint requirements. Listen for clear boundaries and complete sentences.
