Coach Sellers to Use Silence After a Discovery Question
Design practice for sellers who answer their own questions before buyers can respond.
Some sellers ask a strong discovery question, pause for a second, and then fill the silence with a product explanation. The buyer loses the chance to think aloud. An enablement consultant can diagnose this behavior by reviewing a few calls and listening for what happens after an open question. The program should teach a visible habit: ask, wait, then follow the buyer’s answer.
In a fictional design meeting, Luis, a sales leader, tells consultant Rae, “Our reps sound prepared, but they learn very little.” Rae asks to hear a call clip. After a buyer says, “We have trouble with renewals,” the rep immediately explains a feature. Rae says, “What question could the rep ask before offering an answer?” Luis suggests, “What makes renewals difficult today?” Rae replies, “Good. After that question, how long do you want the rep to wait?” Luis says three seconds feels uncomfortable but possible. Together they build a drill where the buyer gives a partial answer and the rep must ask one follow up question.
The drill needs a clear observation point. Managers can count whether the seller waited, then record the buyer detail that emerged. That turns silence from a vague presentation tip into a behavior that can be noticed and coached. A few call clips also help leaders see whether the issue appears in one team or across the sales organization.
Run a short roleplay with a timer. Ask an open question and keep quiet for three full seconds while your partner plays a hesitant buyer. Write the first useful detail you hear after the pause. Repeat the exercise with a different topic. The experience helps managers coach patient listening and the detail it reveals.
