Turn Lost Deal Reviews Into Better Practice
Use a recent loss to identify a sales conversation worth rehearsing without assigning blame.
A lost deal review becomes useful when it looks for a decision the team can improve next time. General complaints about price, product, or effort rarely produce a rehearsal target. An enablement consultant can help leaders choose one moment in the buying process, inspect the evidence, and build a practice scenario around the missing move.
In a fictional review, Morgan, a sales director, says, “We lost again because the buyer chose a cheaper option.” Consultant Seth asks, “When did the buyer first describe price as a concern?” Morgan finds a call where the buyer asked how implementation would affect a small operations team. The seller answered with a rate card. Seth asks, “What question could have clarified the work the customer expected?” Morgan suggests, “Which parts of implementation worry your operations lead?” Seth then asks the group to roleplay that moment, with one person playing the operations lead who worries about staffing.
The review does not need to prove why the deal was lost. It should identify what the seller heard, what they did next, and what they could try in a comparable future conversation. Keep the record factual. Managers can label the moment as a practice candidate and track whether the team uses the improved question in later calls.
Bring one closed lost opportunity to a team meeting. Select a single call excerpt that includes a buyer concern. Have each seller write one follow up question before discussing solutions. Read the questions aloud and choose the one that would reveal the most about the buyer’s decision. That exercise converts a difficult result into a practical learning moment.
