Connect Onboarding Practice to Field Readiness Evidence
Help sales leaders define what a new seller must demonstrate before managing accounts.
Course completion tells a leader that a new seller received material. It does not show whether that seller can use it with a buyer. A consultant can help the team identify field readiness evidence that managers can observe during onboarding.
Marcus asks the head of sales development, “What would a manager need to hear in a first customer call to say a new seller is ready for more responsibility?” She says, “They should be able to qualify the problem.” Marcus follows up, “Which question, listening behavior, or meeting outcome would demonstrate that?” Together they choose a short discovery agenda, an explanation of why the call matters, and a documented next step. The manager will observe these during a supervised call.
Keep the evidence connected to the selling motion. A seller assigned to outbound calls may need to establish relevance and earn a discovery meeting. A seller joining account teams may need to summarize a stakeholder concern and propose an agenda. Managers should agree on what they can directly observe and record why a seller needs more practice.
Choose one onboarding milestone and write a simple observation prompt for it. Roleplay a manager listening to a new seller explain a customer problem. The manager should give feedback tied to a heard behavior, then ask for another attempt. Review whether the prompt can be used in a live conversation without a long form. Share the agreed prompt with managers before the next cohort reaches that milestone.
