Give New Sales Managers a Safe Way to Practice Feedback
Build manager coaching confidence around observed call behavior and private, specific feedback.
Newly promoted managers may praise effort because correction feels risky among former peers. A program helps when it gives them a repeatable way to name one observed behavior, ask for the seller’s view, and agree on a retry. It also needs room for managers to make mistakes before the feedback reaches a live one-to-one.
An enablement consultant should ask what feedback language exists today and where managers get stuck. The answer may reveal that there is no shared standard for a strong opening, a useful discovery question, or a clear next step. Build the practice around one visible moment and the action it makes possible.
In a fictional conversation, Lucas, the head of sales development, says, “They are too busy to become coaches.” Consultant Mei answers, “What takes more time now: one focused review or repeated calls with the same gap?” Lucas says, “They avoid making people defensive.” Mei responds, “We can have managers practice with a recording. They might say, ‘I noticed the buyer named a timeline and the call moved to features. What did you hear there?’ Then the seller chooses a retry for the next call.”
The question invites reflection and keeps the feedback tied to evidence. The manager can be direct while treating the seller as a participant in the plan.
Set up a roleplay that lasts fifteen minutes in groups of three. One person plays a manager, one plays a seller, and a third observes. The manager must cite a precise moment, ask one open question, and agree a next attempt. Rotate roles, then review whether the feedback stayed private, concrete, and respectful.
