Diagnose Discounting Before Teaching a Price Response
A coaching design conversation for teams that discount as soon as buyers mention price.
Immediate discounting can look like a problem with responding to objections, yet the surrounding management system often shapes it. Sellers may be praised for quick closes, deal reviews may omit discount rationale, and managers may never rehearse how to explore value after a buyer mentions price. An enablement consultant should investigate the pattern before offering a new script.
Bring together a few call examples, recent deals, and the guidance managers use. Ask what happened just before each discount and how the seller received approval. Then find out whether managers review the customer’s problem, alternatives, and decision path before they discuss concessions.
In a fictional design session, consultant Rae says, “When a buyer says the price is high, what do sellers usually do next?” Victor, the regional VP, answers, “They ask what price will win.” Rae replies, “Let’s examine three deals and identify the evidence available before that question. Did the seller understand the buyer’s cost of delay, who else was involved, or the reason for the budget concern?” Victor says, “We need a better rebuttal.” Rae says, “A response can help, and the rehearsal needs to reflect the manager’s review process. What will managers praise when a seller holds the conversation open?”
This frames practice around observable choices. It gives leaders a way to reinforce curiosity and deal quality without pretending one sentence will resolve every price conversation.
Run a roleplay where the buyer says, “Your competitor is cheaper.” The seller must ask two context questions before discussing any commercial option. A manager observes whether those questions reveal a real decision factor. Debrief the manager’s feedback, since reinforcement is part of the behavior change.
