Respond When Experienced Sellers Resist Roleplay
Create rehearsal conditions that respect experience and still reveal a skill gap.
Experienced sellers may reject roleplay because past sessions felt staged or detached from their accounts. A consultant should take that reaction seriously and make the practice resemble a decision the seller faces. Realistic constraints make rehearsal worth the time.
Priya hears an account director say, “I have been selling for fifteen years. I do not need to pretend a colleague is a buyer.” Priya answers, “You know your customers well. Could we use the meeting you have on Thursday and practice the moment when the finance leader asks why the project matters now?” The director agrees. Priya asks a manager to play the finance leader using only the facts in the account plan. After the first attempt, the director notices that her explanation lacks a question for the buyer.
Set boundaries before the exercise. Participants can pause, ask for a second attempt, and decline to share sensitive account facts. Give the buyer role a clear concern and limited information. Ask observers to record a behavior that advances the conversation, such as checking an assumption or inviting a stakeholder view. A safe structure allows tough feedback without public scoring.
Invite one respected seller to help choose the scenario for the next team session. Ask them to name a moment that carries real pressure. During the rehearsal, have the manager offer one observation and one retry request. Finish by asking the seller what they will prepare differently for the actual meeting. The manager can revisit that preparation in their next coaching conversation.
