Turn Deal Reviews Into Questions Sellers Can Answer
Design manager practice that makes deal inspection more useful for sellers.
Many deal reviews become a tour through CRM fields because managers lack questions that expose strategy. A consultant can help leaders build a short question set around customer evidence, stakeholder movement, and the next conversation. The point is to improve the manager’s judgment during a live deal.
Owen asks a regional leader, “When a seller says a deal is at risk, what do managers ask next?” She laughs and says, “Usually when it will close.” Owen replies, “Let’s try a question that asks what changed with the buyer.” In a roleplay, the manager says, “The champion went quiet.” Owen asks, “What did the champion agree to do, and what evidence says that is still current?” The leader sees that the seller needs a clearer fact before choosing an action.
Build questions from decisions managers must make. Ask what the buyer has said, who can verify it, what assumption is in the account, and what the seller will do before the next review. Avoid a giant checklist. Five durable questions give managers room to follow the evidence and sellers room to think aloud.
Run a ten minute roleplay using a real but anonymized opportunity. One person is the seller, one is the manager, and one listens for questions that create a decision. At the end, the observer identifies one question that produced useful evidence and one that only requested an update. Add the useful question to the team’s review guide for the following week.
