Build Practice Around a Warm Referral Introduction
Help sellers respect a referral relationship while earning a focused first conversation.
A warm referral changes the opening of a sales conversation. The seller has borrowed trust from the person who made the introduction, so a generic pitch can damage that relationship. An enablement consultant can help a team rehearse an opening that acknowledges the connection, tests relevance, and gives the referred buyer a reason to continue.
In a fictional planning call, Arjun, a partnership leader, tells consultant Claire, “Our reps get introductions from advisors and then send long product emails.” Claire asks, “What did the advisor tell the buyer about the reason for connecting?” Arjun says the advisor usually names a planning problem. Claire offers a roleplay: “Maya suggested we speak because your team is reviewing how managers prepare for account reviews. Is that still a useful place to start?” The buyer replies that the project has moved. Claire asks the seller to learn the new priority and adapt the conversation to it.
The exercise prepares sellers for an introduction that is warm but incomplete. Managers can coach whether the seller names the referral accurately, invites correction, and protects the advisor from exaggerated claims. The goal is a genuine first conversation that helps the buyer decide whether another meeting makes sense.
Ask a teammate to write a two sentence referral note with one missing detail. Practice an opening based only on that note. Your partner should change the buyer’s priority halfway through. End the roleplay by proposing a next conversation with a reason and an attendee. Review whether the seller treated the referral as context and still earned permission to explore.
