SDR: Small Team
Qualify a focused coaching conversation for a founder leading a small sales team.
Small sales teams often put the founder at the center of deal review, hiring, and onboarding. An SDR can earn a meeting by finding one recurring review burden. Ask where the founder is pulled into calls, which behavior new sellers struggle to repeat, and whether another sales leader could own a focused practice.
Morgan spoke with founder Grace, who said, “Every deal near the final stage and every call from a new seller still reaches me.” Morgan asked, “Which one costs you more attention this month?” Grace chose reviews of deals near the final stage because two new hires were still learning the sales process. Morgan replied, “Would a short session with your sales lead help examine how managers prepare those reviews and coach one behavior?” Grace asked, “Will it guarantee more closes?” Morgan said, “I cannot promise that outcome. The session would help us understand the review burden and decide whether a focused practice is worth testing.”
Keep the outreach brief because a leader of a small team will measure the meeting against selling time. State the trigger, one question, and the person who should attend. “You mentioned reviews of deals near the final stage keep returning to you. Could we spend twenty minutes with your sales lead to map the preparation step managers can own?” This gives the prospect a reason to accept or decline.
Roleplay with a colleague acting as a founder who interrupts twice and asks for a growth guarantee. Ask one question before describing capability. Summarize the founder’s answer and request a meeting with the sales lead. Review whether your wording stayed connected to the burden and whether the meeting has a decision to make. The follow-up should include the review moment, attendee, and agenda for deciding what behavior deserves practice.
