Guide a student through a first phone conversation
Help retail consultants explain device and plan choices with the student and account holder involved.
A first phone purchase often includes a student who has strong preferences and an account holder who must approve changes. The retail sales consultant can make the choice easier by inviting both perspectives into a clear discussion of routine, budget, and account responsibility.
Ask how the student will use the device at school, whether durability or accessibility matters, and who manages the account. Use approved materials to explain device payments, plan terms, protection options, and any required authorization. Give the shopper time to compare information without implying that an account change can proceed before the authorized person agrees.
In a fictional store conversation, Keira says, “My son needs his first phone. He wants the newest one, but I need to control the monthly cost.” Jordan replies, “Let’s start with how he will use it and what you want to manage. Will he need a lot of data away from Wi Fi, and are you the account holder?” Keira says she holds the account and he uses school apps and music. Jordan says, “I will show the device choices beside the current approved plan information. We can review payments and the features that affect his routine, then you can choose what fits.”
The decision is whether a preferred device settles the purchase. A complete conversation also covers use, responsibility, and terms. It leaves both people able to explain what they chose and where they can review the agreement.
Practice by roleplaying a student and parent with different priorities. Ask one question for each person before naming a device. End by explaining who can authorize the account change and where the family can read the plan details.
