Guiding an ETF Conversation During a Model Portfolio Rebalance
Help ETF wholesalers explore an advisor's model rebalance process without recommending a client allocation.
An advisor reviewing a model rebalance may ask a wholesaler for a simple answer about what to add or remove. The wholesaler should understand how this firm governs and evaluates its model before offering education. That context supports education without turning the conversation into personalized advice.
An RIA portfolio manager says, “Which ETF should replace our current holding?” The wholesaler can say, “I cannot select an investment for your clients, but I can understand the role your committee is reviewing. What exposure, implementation issue, or research criterion prompted the change?” When the manager mentions tracking method and review of the restricted list, the wholesaler says, “I can provide approved information on the fund’s stated objective, methodology, and risks for your process. Who owns the decision at the home office, and what will they need to see?”
Understand the purpose of the firm's model evaluation before proposing a next step. One firm may seek a research comparison while another needs platform approval first. Ask who makes the allocation decision and whether the discussion concerns a current model, a research watchlist, or advisor education. Route any recommendation request about a particular client through the advisor’s authorized process.
For practice, give a rep a request phrased as a direct recommendation. The rep has sixty seconds to redirect it toward model governance and one educational resource. Review whether they named a practice question, avoided a suitability claim, and secured a next step with the correct research owner.
