Verify ETF Platform Availability Before Answering an Advisor
Teach ETF wholesalers to verify questions about access on a platform and explain who owns the answer.
Platform availability sounds like a factual question with two possible answers, yet brokerage lists, approvals from the home office, and trading access can change. A wholesaler who answers from memory may give an advisor bad information. Treat availability as a verification task with a named source and a narrow promise about what you will confirm.
Ask for the exact platform, advisor firm, and reason for the question. Is the advisor checking an approved list, a trading restriction, or a pending review by the home office? Use the current authorized source or route the request to the team that owns platform information. Do not imply that a fund will trade, clear, or remain approved.
An advisor says, “Can you guarantee this ETF will be available on our platform tomorrow?” The wholesaler replies, “Platform access is determined by the platform and your firm, so I would not guarantee it. If you tell me the platform and your contact at the home office, I can check the current approved source and connect the right support owner. Is there a deadline for your review?” The advisor says the investment committee meets Thursday.
The follow-up should include the source date, any pending review status, and the next person to contact. If the information cannot be verified in time, say so plainly.
Run a drill where the platform list changed last week. The rep should resist the temptation to answer from a previous conversation. Review whether they collect identifiers, verify rather than infer, and communicate a useful update without promising an outcome controlled by someone else.
