ETF Practice Discovery Questions for Advisor Conversations
Help ETF wholesalers learn an advisor's workflow before discussing portfolio tools.
An ETF wholesaler adds value by understanding how an advisor’s practice makes decisions, communicates with households, and implements models. Starting with a ticker or a recent headline asks the advisor to do the translation. Begin with their workflow instead: who sets portfolio policy, how models change, and which client questions create the most work.
Ask, “When your team reviews an ETF, what job does it need to do in the model before you bring it to an investment committee?” An advisor may describe liquidity, cost review, client education, trading procedures, or consistency with a model philosophy. Ask which team member evaluates each issue. This maps the process without suggesting an investment selection.
In a meeting, an advisor says, “We are trying to simplify our model updates.” The wholesaler responds, “Where does the friction occur: research, approval, trading, or explaining changes to clients?” The advisor identifies client explanations as the bottleneck. The wholesaler can then offer approved education about the fund’s stated objective and mechanics, while asking what wording the practice already uses. That is more useful than claiming the product solves every operational problem.
Coach wholesalers to end with a next step for the advisor’s practice. “Would a short session on the fund’s published methodology help your investment team decide whether further research makes sense?” Record the workflow, decision owner, and approved materials requested. Avoid personalized allocations, tax outcomes, or predictions. Good discovery helps an advisor determine whether to investigate a tool within their own process and gives the wholesaler a credible reason to involve the right specialist.
