Prepare a student for a career fair conversation
Help a student choose a practical preparation step before meeting employers at a campus career event.
A career fair can feel intimidating when a student believes every conversation must produce an offer. A student success coach can reduce that pressure by helping the student set a modest goal, prepare a clear introduction, and use the career office for detailed resume or employer guidance.
Tariq tells coach Ellen, "I have never talked to an employer. If I go to the fair, will they think I am wasting their time?" Ellen replies, "What kind of work are you curious about, and what would make the event useful for you?" Tariq says he is interested in facilities management but has little experience. Ellen says, "You could aim to learn how one employer hires students and ask what skills they value. Career services can help you review your resume and identify the employers attending." Tariq asks, "Should I tell them I need a job right away?" Ellen responds, "You can be honest about your interest and availability. Let us practice an introduction that names your program, one relevant class, and the question you want to ask."
Ellen does not suggest that attendance will lead to employment. She makes the event manageable by turning it into a conversation goal. Tariq leaves with a scheduled career services appointment and a short introduction he can revise.
Choose a campus event and write one learning goal for it. Practice a thirty second introduction with a colleague, then ask one open question about the other person's work. Listen for claims you cannot support about hiring. Replace them with a specific question the student can bring to the conversation.
