Support a student whose shift change disrupts class
A student success conversation that identifies barriers and connects the student with the right academic support.
Missed classes after a work schedule change can feel like a private failure to a student. A success coach can make the next step practical by asking what changed, what deadlines are close, and which academic contact can explain the available options. The coach does not decide attendance exceptions or grades.
Dev tells coach Ana, "My manager moved me to nights. I have missed two classes, and I think I have already ruined the term. Can you tell my instructor to excuse it?" Ana says, "I am glad you reached out. When did the new schedule begin, and which course has the nearest deadline?" Dev names a lab report due Friday. Ana replies, "Your instructor decides course attendance and assignment arrangements, so I cannot promise an exception. We can make a short plan for today: send a clear message to the instructor, check the course site for the report requirements, and talk about whether the schedule change is likely to continue. Would you like to draft the message together?" Dev agrees and asks how to explain the situation without sharing more than needed.
Ana helps Dev act before the next deadline. She keeps the message focused on the missed work and a request for guidance. If the schedule is continuing, a program advisor may also need to discuss course timing. The student controls what personal details to share.
Practice by choosing a course deadline and drafting an instructor message in three sentences. Include the relevant fact, the student's request, and a time for follow up. In a coaching review, check that the plan has one action for today and one academic owner for questions outside the coach's authority.
