Follow up after a student misses orientation
Reconnect a student with the important owners and deadlines after they miss a required orientation session.
Missing orientation can create a chain of worries about registration, identification, technology, and belonging. The student success coach can slow that chain down by identifying what the student missed and which office owns each next step. A good follow up carries no assumption about why the student was absent.
Coach Naomi calls Eric and says, "I saw you were unable to attend orientation. I wanted to check what information would help you start classes." Eric answers, "My train was cancelled. Now I think I missed registration and maybe I cannot come." Naomi says, "Let us look at the items orientation covered. Have you received your student email and course schedule?" Eric has the schedule but cannot access the learning system. Naomi replies, "The technology desk can help with access, and the orientation team can tell us whether there is a make up session or an online module. Your program advisor can answer any registration question. I will send the contacts in order so you can start with the account issue today."
Naomi makes a simple sequence: account access, orientation materials, then program questions. She confirms Eric's preferred contact method and asks whether he wants a check in after he speaks with the technology desk. This keeps support available while Eric remains in charge of each contact.
Review the current orientation checklist at your institution. Group its items by office owner before you roleplay a missed session. In the conversation, ask what the student already completed before offering a referral. End with the first action and the time it should happen, then make your written follow up match those details.
