Discuss a possible course load change
Help a student gather the questions and owners involved before changing an academic schedule.
A student considering one fewer course may be balancing work, family, academic standing, and a deadline. The student success coach should not prescribe the schedule. The coach can help the student name the decision, locate the academic and financial questions, and meet the relevant offices before the deadline closes.
Leah says, "I am working extra shifts and want to drop statistics. Will that ruin my aid?" Coach Antonio responds, "I hear that the schedule feels difficult. When is the course change deadline, and have you discussed the course with your academic advisor or instructor?" Leah says the deadline is tomorrow and she has not called anyone. Antonio says, "Your academic advisor can explain how the course fits your program. Financial aid staff review how enrollment changes affect your situation. I cannot determine that outcome here, but we can make a short question list and contact both offices today." Leah asks what to say. Antonio replies, "Tell them the course, current credits, deadline, and the work change. Ask what information they need to review your options."
Antonio keeps the decision with Leah while making the clock visible. He avoids telling her to stay or withdraw from the course. The written plan includes the two office contacts and a reminder to read the official deadline guidance.
In a coaching practice, give the student a deadline that is less than two days away. Ask them to identify the academic owner and the aid owner without prompting. Then have them state the four facts each office needs. Debrief whether the plan supports an informed choice under time pressure.
