Fintech SDR Discovery: Find the Friction in a Collections Workflow
Use respectful questions to learn how a finance team follows up on open invoices.
Collections outreach is easy to mishandle. An SDR who implies that customers are not paying or that a finance team lacks discipline will lose the conversation. Start with the routine work: who identifies an open invoice, how they decide to contact the customer, and where the contact history lives.
A fictional professional-services firm has account managers who know the client relationship and a finance team that sends reminders. The controller says follow-up is inconsistent. The SDR asks, “When an invoice passes its due date, what tells the account manager that outreach is needed?” The controller explains that a weekly spreadsheet is shared by email, but responses are recorded in separate notes. That is a concrete handoff worth exploring without asking for trade-offs or naming a product.
Ask what makes an item difficult to close, whether a dispute follows a different path, and who decides when to pause contact. Keep the scope operational. Do not suggest legal collection tactics, predict cash results, or claim that an automated process will improve recovery. If the prospect shares sensitive account information, redirect to the level of detail appropriate for an initial conversation.
Practice a concise opener: “I speak with finance teams that are trying to keep invoice follow-up visible across finance and client owners. Is there one handoff in that process you would change?” If the prospect names a specific task, ask for a short meeting with the workflow owner. Coach SDRs to earn the meeting by restating the task accurately and naming the people involved. That approach gives the workflow owner a clear reason to meet.
