Fintech SDR Discovery: Use a Revenue Recognition Handoff as a Hypothesis
Explore finance data handoffs without offering accounting guidance or making outcome claims.
Revenue recognition work is governed by the customer’s accounting policies and advisors, so an SDR should never position an outbound call as accounting advice. There is still a useful operational question to ask: how does information move from a commercial event to the finance team that needs to review it?
A fictional software provider bills annual contracts but allows certain customers to change user counts midyear. Sales records the amendment, customer success updates an account note, and finance receives a monthly export. The SDR asks, “When a contract changes, who makes sure finance sees the change?” The prospect explains that an analyst in revenue operations compares two files near month end. The SDR now has a specific workflow to discuss without interpreting accounting treatment.
Ask which event causes rework, who owns the source record, and whether the reviewer can tell what changed. Do not state how revenue should be recognized, whether a particular record is sufficient, or that a platform will ensure compliance. Explain that policy and accounting conclusions remain with the customer and their qualified advisers.
Coach the SDR to respond to “Can your system handle our revenue rules?” with, “I cannot assess your accounting rules. I can learn how contract changes reach the people who review them.” Then ask whether a short discovery conversation with finance operations and the record owner would be useful. Ask the prospect to select one amendment type for the discussion, so the session has a bounded example. A strong call ends with a defined operational question that gives the finance team a concrete topic to examine.
