Clarify Priorities When Travelers Disagree About Pace and Activity

When travelers disagree about pace, an advisor should resist choosing a side. The planning task is to find the experiences each person values, the time they need to recover between them, and the choices that can remain optional. A full schedule may satisfy one traveler while making the trip exhausting for another.

Ask each person for one experience they most want, one thing they would happily skip, and the pace that feels comfortable on a typical day. Learn whether the group wants shared time at every meal or can split for part of an afternoon. These answers create a useful framework before any supplier options are compared.

Erin said, “I want museums and food tours every day.” Her partner, Joel, said, “I want three afternoons with no plans.” The advisor replied, “Both preferences can shape the itinerary. Erin, which experiences would make the trip feel complete? Joel, when do you most need unscheduled time?” Erin chose a market tour and two museums. Joel said he wanted free time after lunch. The advisor said, “I’ll develop an outline with morning activities and open afternoons on most days. I’ll also show one optional evening tour, so you can decide later whether it belongs in the plan.”

Write the shared priorities and each person’s flexibility beside the draft itinerary. A traveler can then see why an activity is included, optional, or left out. Supplier availability still needs confirmation before a booking decision.

For practice, have an advisor interview two colleagues who want opposite holiday styles. Review whether the advisor asks both people the same core questions, names a workable tradeoff, and turns the answers into a simple daily rhythm.
