Build a Condition Monitoring Proof Plan for an Older Press
Set useful monitoring questions and acceptance measures without predicting a hydraulic press failure.
Condition monitoring can support maintenance decisions, but an early conversation cannot establish the date of a failure. A technical sales engineer can help the reliability team decide which signals are worth studying and what evidence would make a proof plan useful.
In a fictional call, reliability engineer Malik says, “We replaced seals twice this year. Can you tell us when the press will fail? We have one shutdown day next month.” Engineer Claire answers, “I cannot infer a failure date from those repairs. What maintenance history, hydraulic information, and downtime events do you have, and where could data be accessed?” Malik says the plant has repair records and a schematic, but no central vibration system. Claire says, “Let’s use the shutdown day to confirm installation constraints and define a limited proof with the press supervisor, controls technician, and planner. We can agree what signal is captured, who reviews it, and what result would justify further work.”
Claire transforms prediction pressure into a plan for learning. She keeps the scope tied to plant data and engineering review, rather than assigning certainty to a single asset history.
Practice by asking the engineer for a date twice. The response should remain calm and should return to available evidence. A manager can listen for a signal, an installation constraint, and an acceptance measure. The close should reserve the shutdown window for agreed inspection activities and name the owner of the next decision.
