Review a partner customer reference request with permission
Help a reseller seek a relevant customer reference through consent, confidentiality, and bid requirements.
A customer reference can support a bid, but a partner should never assume access to a customer relationship. The channel manager can help the reseller identify the bid requirement, assess whether a potential reference is relevant, and use the approved consent path. This protects the customer’s agreement and gives the bid team a more reliable request.
Marta, a reseller leader, says, “Can you introduce us to your best customer today? We need a reference for a public sector bid.” Ian replies, “We need the customer’s permission and a reference that matches the bid requirement. What does the bid ask the reference to demonstrate, and what use of the customer’s name is proposed?” Marta says the bid needs a similar procurement model. Ian says, “I will send that requirement to the reference manager. They can check the customer agreement and ask whether the customer wishes to participate. We should wait for that approval before promising an introduction.”
Capture the procurement model, subject matter, requested format, deadline, and confidentiality needs in the request. A reference manager can then determine whether a suitable customer may be approached. If the request is declined, help the partner explore approved evidence that addresses the bid without naming a customer.
Practice answering a request for immediate access. Begin with the consent requirement, then ask one question that makes the reference match more precise. Your manager can listen for whether you protect the customer while keeping the partner’s bid moving.
