Enablement Consultant: Sensitive Feedback
How an enablement consultant can make difficult coaching feedback specific and safe.
Feedback becomes unsafe when a manager judges personality instead of a recorded behavior. “You are dismissive” gives a seller no reliable action to try. An enablement consultant can teach a path from an observable moment, through its effect on the conversation, to a focused next attempt that the manager can review later.
In a fictional session, Dana tells a manager, “Your feedback felt dismissive.” He replies, “I was being direct.” Dana asks, “Which exact sentence did you use, and what did the rep do after hearing it?” He recalls saying, “You always rush the discovery.” The rep stopped asking questions. Dana suggests, “At minute six, you moved to the demo before confirming the buyer’s reporting problem. What question could you use next time to test that problem?”
The rewrite changes a personal verdict into coaching the seller can use. It ties the feedback to a moment the manager and seller can revisit. It also lets the seller explain context: perhaps the buyer had limited time, or perhaps the manager missed an earlier discovery question. The objective is a conversation that produces a next attempt and protects the relationship between a new manager and a former peer.
Use an anonymized call excerpt and ask participants to separate observable facts from their interpretations. Have a peer deliver feedback that lands poorly, then pause and name the moment that made it vague or personal. Write one question the manager can use in the next manager conversation. Set a date to review the next call and whether the seller had a real chance to try it.
