Help a transfer student find a connection path
Explore a transfer student's barriers to belonging and offer options they can choose.
A transfer student who feels isolated may have already heard a general invitation to attend events. A better coaching conversation finds the practical barrier and the kind of contact the student would value. Belonging cannot be promised, and optional activities work only when the student can choose them.
Marcus says, "I commute two hours each way. I do not know anyone here, so why would another event help?" Coach Nia replies, "That commute makes unplanned events hard. What kind of connection would make campus feel more workable: a faculty conversation, another transfer student, or a group tied to your program?" Marcus says he would value someone in his major but missed orientation. Nia says, "Transfer services may know program based gatherings, and your department may have a faculty mentor route. I can show you those options and you can decide which contact fits your schedule. Would a brief introduction request to the department be useful?"
Nia does not interpret Marcus's absence from orientation as lack of interest. She uses the commute as information for matching an option. A small request is easier to accept or decline than a broad instruction to get involved.
List three connection routes at your institution and the person who owns each. Roleplay with a student who has limited time. End by asking for a preferred next action, then check that it is voluntary and specific.
